The many battles that occurred across the state and beyond resulted in a vast number of prisoners and wounded soldiers that needed a place to go. What To Expect
Farmer’s Market
The Farmer’s Market is one part of Richmond’s oldest neighborhood, Shockoe Bottom, that was home to numerous sites of several Civil War era hospitals and prisons (some still standing, others lost to the past). This tour will share with you how these prisons and hospitals came to be, and what happened to those buildings during and after the war. Also learn about the overwhelming influx of soldiers and prisoners that found their way to Richmond during this tumultuous chapter of American history.
